Garwood Volunteer FD visits Seniors
Fire Official Leonard Spina and Fire Inspector Ed Syers presented a talk on Fire Safety and Prevention to the senior citizens living at the Village at Garwood recently. Their talk raised awareness of how simple household items can become a fire hazard from the use of multiple power strips without surge protectors, to wearing long loose sleeves when cooking, and keeping shades on lamps. Fire Official Leonard Spina said, “We always enjoy visiting at the Village at Garwood. It’s a productive hour going over safety tips with the residents.” The seniors were very appreciative of their visit.
The Executive Director of Village at Garwood, Liz Fennik, remarked, “We want to thank the Garwood Fire Department, Fire Official Leonard Spina and Fire Inspector Ed Syers for visiting the Village at Garwood Senior Housing to discuss Fire Safety with our residents. It was a lively exchange of vital information amongst the attendees. Safety for the residents has always been our priority. The Garwood Fire Department has been an integral part of the Village at Garwood Senior Housing providing annual Fire Safety Presentations since it opened in 2015. They have been a wonderful partner over the years.”
The Garwood Fire Department was organized in 1903, and currently boasts a roster of 50 members. The Department covers an area of 1 square mile, which is known as the industrial center of Union County.
The Village at Garwood is a senior housing project, sponsored by the Westfield Senior Citizens housing Corporation, that provides 71 units of affordable, one-bedroom apartments to eligible seniors. The 83,000 square foot, three story housing complex is located in a quiet residential area, surrounded by a mix of single family and multifamily homes, and within walking distance of most amenities and services. Designed with an attractive townhouse facade, the 72 unit apartment complex includes one unit for a resident manager, 41 parking spaces, an on-site laundry facility, and community room.
