(above) Ruppert Stadium, the home of the Newark Bears, at 258 Wilson Avenue in the Ironbound section. In 1936, a major renovation would add lights, allowing night games nearly 10 years before Yankee Stadium followed suit. That same year, an additional 7,000 seats were added, bringing the capacity to 19,000. Ruppert Stadium was demolished in 1967 and the land was sold to the Newark Board of Education.
