Titanic, Revisited

On February 24th, the Fourth grade Gifted and Talented students from Roosevelt School in Rahway went on a field trip to the Liberty Science Center. The students toured the Titanic exhibit which featured more than 100 authentic artifacts set within replicas of cabins and other areas within the famous ill-fated ship. Upon entering the exhibition, students were drawn back in time to April 1912, when the ship embarked on its maiden voyage. They received a replica boarding pass, assumed the role of a passenger, and followed a chronological journey through life on the Titanic—from the ship’s construction, to life on board, to the moments of impact and sinking, and the modern day efforts to recover and conserve the wreckage for future generations. The highlight of the trip was touching an “iceberg” to feel just how cold the water was at the time that the ship sank.
