Westfield High School Social Studies teacher, Daniel Farabaugh, was one of 60 teachers nationwide selected to participate at the Supreme Court Summer Institute on June 22-27. The Institute, open to teachers in the fields of lawrelated and civic education, is co-sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society.
Farabaugh, who teaches an Advanced Placement US History course as well as classes in Humanities, Sociology and Comparative Religions at Westfield High School, praised the professional development program. “The presenters were both experts in their fields and able to convey that information effectively. What really set this apart was the fact that everything could translate easily into a classroom environment. Every idea could be used as is in a classroom but also could be modified easily,” he explained.
At the Institute, Farabaugh studied recent Supreme Court cases in detail and learned innovative teaching methods for conveying this information to students beginning this fall. Wellknown Supreme Court lawyers, reporters, scholars, and educators were among the speakers and instructors. Teachers also visited the Court to attend decisions.
Andrea Brennan, Social Studies Supervisor K- 12 in the Westfield Public Schools, summed up Farabaugh’s opportunity by saying, “This is a unique and once in a life time experience to collaborate with teachers from around the country to create and use a variety of interactive strategies to teach students about the U.S. Supreme Court and its cases.”
