Visit Washington Rock During Annual Journey Through The Past

Submitted by Jim Koch, Cultural, Heritage, and Historic Preservation Committee

Soon there will be many visitors to Washington Rock. Many will visit on October 10th from 10 to 5 and others on October 11th from noon until 4. This is part of the annual Journey Through The Past sponsored by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. One might learn something new about the activities at the Rock since June of 1777. Apparently up to that time it was just relegated to being just a “Rock”.
And at the end of October there are those that arrive just to marvel at the colorful leaves and the fall colors. Am always asked how General George could see the British troops with all that foliage that the British had planted. But in 1777 the vista was mainly cleared farmland. The Acme was not open at that time. Plus General Howe of the British made sure his troops were seen in order to lure General George off of his mountain protection because the British had the superior supplies and manpower.
