Veteran Scout Awards

Roselle Park BSA Troop

On October 3rd, eight individuals with a long history of volunteerism and leadership in Scouting received Veteran Awards. The BSA Veteran award recognizes individual members for tenure in Scouting. Veterans agree to live up to their Scouting obligations, make themselves available for service, and be active in promoting Scouting as circumstances permit.  The recognition item is a lapel pin denoting the number of years of service and a certificate from Patriots Path Council.

Among the award recipients was James McCoy who received the 50 Year Veteran Award. Mr. McCoy started as a Cub Scout in Elizabeth, NJ in 1946 and continued to Boy Scout Troop 6 of Elizabeth, NJ, earning his Eagle Scout Rank at age 17 in 1957.  James stayed on as an Adult Leader with Boy Scout Troop 6 of Elizabeth, NJ until 1967.  Once his two sons, Brian and Shawn became Cub Scouts in 1986, he became Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 116 of Roselle Park, and then became Scoutmaster of Troop 56 of Roselle Park from 1991 – 2018.  He is still very much a part of Troop 56 offering his experience, advice, and direction to current leadership.  James was also a past Order of the Arrow Arrowman.

Joel Reed received the 25 Year Veteran Award. Mr. Reed started as Assistant Cubmaster in Cub Scout Pack 116 of Roselle Park in 1998, became Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 56 of Roselle Park in 2003, and has remained a committee member and an advisor for Troop 56.  Joel was also a past Order of the Arrow Arrowman.

James Gordon and Dan Smith received the 15 year Veteran Award.  Donald Chin, Shawn McCoy and Brian McCoy received the 10 year Veteran Award, and Cat McCoy received the 5 year Veteran Award.

Recognition was also given to Percy LaRosa, Kat Smith, and Sue Chin for their significant contributions to the Troop and to Lisa Coppola for attending and photographing many Troop events.  Troop 56 is always welcoming new members.  To learn more about scouting in Roselle Park, visit beascout.org.
