SPF High School DECA Receives Awards in California

Seventeen Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School DECA students traveled to Anaheim California to compete in the International Career Development Conference. Over 10,000 students from fourteen different countries competed in various business, leadership and entrepreneurship events. Students compete in categories that require business presentations as well as core competency tests. Four students from Scotch Plains Fanwood High School were recognized for outstanding achievement at the conference. Senior Claudia Gentile was recognized for having one of the top three test scores in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism. Senior Max Mazursky was recognized for having one of the top three test scores in Sports and Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Making. In addition the team of Mazursky and junior Niva Patel placed amongst the top twenty teams in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Making event based upon their case study presentation and test scores.
Senior Matthew Fox was awarded the prestigious Larry Lorenzi scholarship. The Scholarship was awarded based on Matt’s DECA involvement, leadership ability, community service and academic performance.
The scholarship is named after former NJ state DECA advisor and National DECA board member, Larry “Loris” Lorenzi who helped to expand NJ DECA.
The entire Scotch Plains-Fanwood chapter was recognized at the national conference for achieving Thrive level status. Thrive level chapters complete three projects throughout the school year in Entrepreneurship, Community Service and Promotion. Only twenty-two schools from New Jersey were recognized as Thrive level chapters.
DECA is the co-curricular Marketing and Business club of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. DECA prepares emerging leaders and. entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Mrs. Marjorie FitzGibbon is the club’s advisor.
