Sumi-e Group Art Display

The Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library present the artwork of the Sumi-e Group of New Jersey in the library’s gallery spaces, from October 3 through November 30, 2022.

The Sumi-e Group of New Jersey has been in existence for over two decades and consists of practitioners, lovers and enthusiasts of the art of Chinese and Japanese brush painting.

Sumi-e or Brush Painting is essentially ink and watercolor on rice paper using traditional Chinese or Japanese brushes. The artist takes advantage of the flexibility in the traditional brush and the absorbency of the rice paper to create its special aesthetics. It emphasizes lines and brush strokes’ qualities, such as tones and flow, and values simplicity and white spaces in the composition. This show represents mostly work done during the pandemic. It will feature flowers, birds, and landscape compositions. The Sumi-e Group hopes to bring about a feeling of peace and calm during this unusual time.

An ancillary show of small artwork will be in the glass cabinet in the library. This will include fans, both paper and silk, and glazed ceramic tiles, decorated in the Sumi-e technique.
