All Year Long – Celebrate the NP Library’s 100th Anniversary

The New Providence Memorial Library is celebrating its 100th anniversary from our founding in 1921. Join us all year long as we celebrate! Catch Up on Summer Reading! (Middle School)
September 1-7
Did you space out over the summer and forget about your summer reading? We’ve got book lists and displays of both fiction and nonfiction books you can get through this week to still satisfy your summer reading requirements! Check out the metal display case on the side of the YA shelves for laminated book lists and books that are available right now for check out. Storytime on the Lawn (Kids)
September 2 at 10 a.m.
Join Ms. Sam on the front lawn for outdoor storytime. We’ll read some stories, sing some songs and learn some rhymes! Email npmlchildrens@gmail.com to register. Masks required for children ages 5 + and adults.

Tenafly Nature Center: Hanging with the Herps (Kids)
September 9 at 3:30 p.m.
Develop an understanding of why scientists classified reptiles and amphibians as herps and how their internal and external structures support their growth and survival. Learn about the special adaptations that make each of these groups unique and meet 4-5 live reptiles and amphibians. Registration is required. This program will take place on the library front lawn weather permitting.

Book Group (Adults)
September 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The book group will discuss “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi, a novel that stretches from the tribal wars of 18th century Ghana to the streets of 20th century Harlem. Virtual Club Phoenix (Kids) Club
September 13 at 3:30 p.m.
Phoenix is online! In this program kids will learn about science, engineering, and logical thinking. Watch a variety of cool science experiments and learn how you can do them at home! This program is run by teen volunteers, who are passionate about sharing their love of science and STEM with younger children. Videos will be posted once a month at 3:30 p.m. on the library’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/c/newprovlibrary

Baseball Discussion Group (All Ages)
September 13 at 7 p.m.- 9 p.m.
You’re invited to discuss baseball teams, players and issues of the sport with other baseball fans over zoom. Children with a guardian are welcome to join this group of mostly seniors who have been meeting monthly for several years. Join us to get the inside scoop on how admissions officers review and evaluate the different sections of the Common Application, how to effectively list and describe your activities, accomplishments, and hobbies in the Activities section, what to write in the Additional Information section (and what you should definitely steer clear of writing in there), and how you can make the most out of the limited space you have. Learn all about origami and how to make your own creations right at home! This program is run by teen volunteers, who are passionate about sharing their love of science and STEM with younger children. For children in grades 3-4. Book Group (Adults)
September 21 at 10:30 a.m.
The book group chose to read “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith after it learned that “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” was the most popular Armed Services Edition provided to American soldiers fighting in World War II. Copies of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” will be available to check out at the front desk one month before the discussion. Teen Volunteer Training (7th-12th graders)
September 21, 22, 23 at 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Are you interested in earning volunteer hours working at the New Providence Library? If so, email NPMLTeens@gmail.com BY SEPT 20 to express interest. Indicate your name, grade, email address and your volunteer schedule availability. Training will take place on Sept. 21, 22, and 23 (dates and groups will be assigned based on numbers of interested volunteers). These training dates are for all volunteers who wish to work Sept – Feb. Next training sessions for teens will be in Feb. 2022.
