The Westfield Public School District has recently been named one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” in the nation for its outstanding commitment to music education.
The 2018 Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Westfield Public Schools is among 583 school districts nationwide to be recognized.
The award is based on music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, funding, graduation requirements and community music-making programs.
“I’m very proud of the music department on receiving this honor for the first time,” says Thomas Weber, Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts for Westfield Public Schools. “It is the support of the Board of Education members, administration, teachers, staff, community and our talented students that made this national recognition possible.”
Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music.
“Westfield Public Schools has a robust music curriculum with many talented students recognized each year for musical honors,” says Superintendent of Schools Margaret Dolan. “I congratulate Mr. Weber and all of our music instructors, conductors, directors and, of course, our student musicians for this prestigious recognition. Music truly does spark the imagination.”
