Linden 7th Annual Celebration of African American History

Linden’s 7th annual celebration of African American History will be held on Thursday, February 15,2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Linden Multi-Purpose Center 1025 John St, Linden. The event is free. Light refreshments will be served.
The event is hosted by Linden Councilwoman Rhashonna Cosby- Hurling in partnership with the Division of Public Property and Community Affairs. It will include a musical performance by the Linden Magriol Singers, presentation of awards for the city-wide essay and poster contests, and the recognition a notable local African American: Mrs. Atiya Perkins. This year’s honoree has made a great many valuable contributions to the Linden community as an educator and an administrator.

Cosby says, “When one thinks of people making history, we should always acknowledge individuals who are often in the background making sure things are done because they are some of the African Americans who are today, making history. I am excited that we are able to once again recognize people in our community, and I believe we should give people their flowers when they can smell them.”
In 2011, it was Cosby who organized the first ever Black History program in the 5th Ward. She also initiated the annual designation of a portion of Blancke St (in front of City Hall) as “African American Way” for the month of February. “ In 2018 Women are still besieged in a male dominated world and I am pleased that we have such a worthy woman to honor this year.” Says Cosby.  She continued with,” Mrs. Perkins is an inspiration to girls everywhere especially those whose lives she has touch right here in Linden.”
Linden Students are encouraged to submit original poems or essays about “A black person who inspires them” to the Councilwoman no later than February 12th for a chance to win a cash prize. Submissions should be sent via email to rcosby@linden-nj.org.
