Clark Preschool Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week

October was fire prevention month and the Clark Fire Department’s visit to the schools is always a big hit! Their focus is on fire safety, prevention, and overall personal safety. The students learned there are many precautions that people can take to create a safer environment at home, school, and work.
During the Clark Fire Department’s visit to the Clark Preschool on October 13th, firemen came dressed in full gear demonstrating the fire alarm and providing hands-on experience with the fire hoses. Students were also shown the video Sparky’s ABC’s of Fire Safety. The activities that followed provided multiple ways to learn about fire safety maximizing the learning outcome. According to Supervisor of the Preschool and Nurse Lori Kowalski, “It was a perfect way to introduce the children to fire safety concepts.” The fire department also distributed junior safety fire hats, coloring activity books, crayons, tot finder labels, and fire safety information for the parents.
A week-long unit of fire prevention activities also started in the preschool classrooms. Ms. Ashley Tenpenny, physical education teacher, helped spread the word about fire safety by conducting fire drills and evacuation drills. During the drills, students practiced “stop, drop, and roll.” All students learned to be prepared and plan ahead!
Fire prevention was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The 2016 fire prevention theme is: “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”
