July 4th is the date of the 36th Annual Firecracker 4Miler starting at 9 am at Nomahegan Park Cranford. The Firecracker 4 Miler began in 1980 with 225 runners. A few years later the fun run was added. Between both events, the race now attracts nearly 1,500 runners of all classes along with several thousand spectators. Course records for both male and female were set in 1995: Female 22:10 min; Male 18:20 min. The Firecracker is the Cranford Jaycees principal fundraising event to benefit the Jaycee Scholarship award. The fund awards scholarships every year to high school seniors residing in the Township of Cranford who have demonstrated scholastic achievement and a commitment to community service. This year the race is part of the USATF-NJ Grand Prix series, which the 2016 race director Kevin Cumiskey hopes to bring some new excitement to the race. The Jaycees are grateful for the support of the community, the Police Department, Fire Department, the First Aid Squad and the DPW / Parks Department for the assistance they provide every year along with the many sponsors. This year Investors Bank is the title sponsor of the 4 Miler with Dave Weichert – Magical Travel the title sponsor of the fun run. Registration is available through www.cranfordjaycees.org for more information contact roadrace@cranfordjaycees.org.
