WHS students excel in 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program

Westfield High School senior Benjamin Kevelson has been named a National Merit Semi-finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1.1 percent of students who take the Preliminary SAT test qualify as National Merit semi-finalists. They are the highest scoring entrants and are eligible to apply for National Merit scholarships. The program honors students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Additionally, WHS Principal Dr. Derrick Nelson announced that 19 WHS students have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students place in the top five percent of the students in the country who took the Preliminary SAT/Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test., Dr. Nelson congratulated each of the following students for their commitment to their education: Yallen Bai, Chloe Brown, Michael Canabarro, Joseph Ensslin, Lindsay Freidenrich, Fiona Gillespie, Rachael He, Yenteen Hu, Marisa Li, Allison Mattessich, Timothy McAuliffe, Kenneth Meyer, Ryan Qin, Lindsey Sharlow, Daniel Shenker, Jacob Tananbaum, Nicholas Weiner, Eric Yang, and Junlin Yi.
According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
