Making a Difference

Submitted by Krish Thapar
When I was reading the November Edition of the Times For Kids in 2013, I read about typhoon Haiyan that had hit Philippines. It was very disastrous for the country. Many children lost their parents, their families, their homes, and their schools. At that time I realized how blessed I was to have a safe environment where everything was provided and easily accessible. I then, decided to help at least one child in Philippines. After exchanging some ideas with my Mom, I decided to do a Valentine’s Day card and loom bracelet sale at my school.
The next day, I spoke to my school principal, and my second grade teacher, Mrs. Kelly Cannizzo, I discussed my fundraising idea with them. After going through some administrative formalities, it was all approved. I then presented my idea to some of my schoolmates and everyone was excited to join in and help.
We all decided to make the cards and loom bracelets during our recess time. We worked hard, and it all paid off. We sold almost everything during our sale and raised $353.25. With that money, we sponsored a child in Philippines. His name is Jimarald Men, and he wants to be a police officer when he gets older. We have exchanged some letters and pictures with him over the years.
Since then, my classmates and I have been doing our Valentine’s Day tradition every year. And it gets better every time!
This is the fourth year. I have changed schools and I am now at Central School in Warren. My new friends at Central School were equally enthusiastic and supportive. We made great progress and raised $535 with our sale this year. We are sponsoring a 12-year-old boy, Harsh, in Kolkata, India this year.
l sincerely want to thank all my friends and my wonderful teachers over the years, Mrs. Kelly Cannizzo, Mrs. Ellen Colandrea, Mrs. Ellen Ritz, Mrs. SanAntonio, and most of all Mrs. Alison Tugya, the principal of Central School for all their help and encouragement.
