Carl H. Kumpf Middle School Career Day

The sixth grade team at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School hosted a Career Day on May 17th. The objective of the program was to introduce students to a variety of career opportunities. Sixteen parents and community members volunteered to speak about their professions. The presenters, including a doctor, veterinarian, reporter, fashion designer, and aircraft rescue firefighter among many others, made the day a tremendous success. The volunteers addressed such topics as how they entered the profession and the education required.
“It’s great to see the middle school working with the students to get them thinking about their careers. The event was a great success and a credit to the sixth grade team of teachers and administrators. It was easy to see that the kids were engaged and enthusiastic and I think they got a sense of the wealth of opportunities that will be available for them. It is never too early to talk to our kids about their career paths,” stated Mr. Cistaro, sixth grade parent and presenter.
Students attended six 20-minute sessions based on their top three choices. Many of the speakers brought in hands-on activities making it an interactive learning environment. Additionally, as part of each session, students were given an opportunity to have some of their questions answered. The day culminated in a resume writing activity in which students applied what they learned throughout the day.
Ms. Casale-Broski, sixth grade team leader,  stated, “It was exciting to see the students conducting experiments with our chemist and learning what a day in the life of a police officer was like, among other things. The Career Day was both interesting and inspiring. As teachers, we always try to bring our students new and exciting ways to learn. This Career Day was the physical representation of that mission.”
Mr. Rodriguez, sixth grade teacher, also commented, “This was a great day for our sixth grade students. It really encouraged them to think about their goals for the future. It was also important for them to see how what they learn in the classroom extends into the real world. The sixth grade team was glad to be able to bring such a valuable learning experience to our students.”
