Cadet Staff Sergeant Veronica Vergara Receives The “Phase One Cadet of The Year” Award

Scotch Plains resident Cadet Staff Sergeant Veronica Vergara, a volunteer in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP,US Air Force Auxiliary), received the “Phase One Cadet of the Year” award for the New Jersey Wing. She received the award at the CAP NJ Wing Conference which was hosted at the Liberty Science Center on April 16th, 2016. Veronica Vergara competed with cadets from 23 NJ CAP squadrons and received the award from Colonel Steven Tracy, NJ Wing Commander at the Conference. In addition, Veronica received recognition for participation in the 2015-2016 National CyberPatriot (Computer and Network Security) competition as a member of one of the many NJ CAP teams.
Furthermore, at the conference, Veronica and her team participated in the Aerospace Education Competition and presented their team’s theory on “How Artificial Intelligence Will Impact Aviation or Aerospace Development 20 Years from Now”. Her team members included Cadet Staff Sergeant Ethan Morrobel, Cadet Senior Airman Joseph Cajigal, Cadet Airman Gavin Perry, and Cadet Airman Charles Phillips. Cadet Vergara is a student at the Academy for Information Technology in the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools.
These cadets are members of the Capt. “Bud” Jackson Squadron who meet every Tuesday from 7:00PM to 9:00PM at the Chatham High School in room L10. The squadron serves the youth from Chatham, Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Fanwood, Kenilworth, Mountainside, New Providence, Scotch Plains, Summit, Watchung, Westfield, and other neighboring towns. CAP offers the cadet program to students from ages 12 to 18 years old. The program provides Aerospace Education, STEM, Orientation Flights, Physical Training, Summer Camps (both nationally & internationally), and  many other programs.
