Baby Goats, a Stilt Band, Games and Crafts…..and Daffodils!

Celebrate spring, and Earth Day, with a “host of golden daffodils,” as poet William Wordsworth wrote, at Reeves-Reed Arboretum and enjoy one of the largest daffodil collections in New Jersey, Sunday, April 23, from 11 am to 4 pm. The collection, planted in the Arboretum’s glacially carved ‘kettle’ or bowl, was started in the early 1900s by the original owners of the property, the Wisners. Today the collection boasts more than 50,000 bulbs and Daffodil Day has become one of the most eagerly anticipated signature events at the Arboretum bringing visitors from all over the tri-state area.
Everyone always seems impatient for spring, but daffodil peeking is only one part of the festivities. With Daffodil Day on the heels of Earth Day, The Arboretum staff, headed by Director of Children’s Education Jackie Kondel, and Environmental Educators Lisa Martin and Althea Llewellyn, will host a day’s worth of wonderful, family-friendly activities such as an outdoor farmer’s market with vendors and food trucks, and “green themed” crafts and games for all. A special treat this year will be the return of the Bond Street Theatre’s Shinbone Alley Stilt Band. This internationally renowned dynamic ensemble of musicians plays an eclectic repertoire of Dixieland, Swing, Rock, Jazz and Blues, all while walking on stilts! A not-to-be-missed stilt walking workshop will also be on the day’s agenda.
Professional photographer, Bruce Lorenz, an Arboretum favorite, will be on hand to take those special family photographs, and be sure to chat with fabric artist Alice Rudell, one of our featured artists in the current exhibit in the Wisner House Gallery, HOOKED ON NATURE: hooked & sewn art, as she offers insights to the unique artistry of hooking and sewing recycled materials into wondrous pieces of art.
So mark your calendars for Sunday, April 23, from 11 am to 4 pm for Daffodil Day. And be sure to visit with our newest brood of baby goats, honored and welcomed special guests to each and every spring festival here at Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Thanks to underwriting by our partners at Investors Savings Bank, Daffodil Day is free to all RRA members. The admission for nonmembers is $10 per person or $25 per family. Not a member? Now’s the time to sign up!  For more information about Daffodil Day and other events and workshops at Reeves-Reed Arboretum, please visit our website at www.reeves-reedarboretum.org or call 908-273-8787 x 1515.
